Pool builders, concreters and landscapers spend serious time getting a finish right. Exposed aggregate, polished concrete, honed concrete, tiles, pavers. The slab gets poured, the finish gets dialled, the surround looks the way it should — and then a standard plastic skimmer lid or a powder-coated cast inspection lid lands in the middle of it and undermines the entire effect.
Hardware ruins finishes. It is the single most common detail that drags a beautifully finished concrete pool surround back to looking ordinary. The fix is to specify stainless steel skimmer lids and hidden drains from the outset, set them flush with the surrounding finish, and use the right grade of stainless so the lids hold up to pool chemistry and outdoor exposure.

Standard pool skimmer lids are moulded plastic. They sit proud of the deck, they yellow in the WA sun within a season, and they chip and crack under chair legs, pool maintenance equipment and the occasional dropped tool. After two or three summers, every plastic lid we have seen on a Perth pool deck is either discoloured, cracked, or both.
The deeper problem is visual. A round plastic disc on a beautiful exposed aggregate or honed concrete surface signals “this is where the pool equipment hides.” The hardware speaks louder than the finish. Owners who have spent good money on the surround end up with their eye drawn to the lid every time they look across the deck.
The same applies to inspection lids, sewer access points and stormwater chambers that fall within the visible deck or driveway area. A standard cast metal lid in the middle of a polished concrete driveway is a permanent visual full stop. Once it is in, it stays.
A stainless steel skimmer lid is a flush-mounted lid with a recessed tray that accepts wet-pour concrete or paving infill. The stainless frame sits into the existing pool skimmer box opening. The recessed tray is then filled with the same material as the surrounding deck — concrete, paving stone or tile — so the lid effectively disappears into the surface once cured.

Not all stainless steel performs the same outdoors. Grade 304 is fine for indoor or sheltered use. Grade 316L is a different category. The “L” indicates low carbon, and the addition of molybdenum gives it dramatically better resistance to pitting and corrosion in chloride environments.

This is the part that matters for any new build. A flush-finish stainless steel skimmer lid is straightforward to install during a fresh concrete pour. Retrofitting one into a cured slab is significantly harder, more expensive and rarely gives the same finish. Plan the lid in at the design stage.
What good installers plan for on every new pool surround:
For polished or honed concrete surrounds, the polishing or honing pass runs across both the deck and the lid infill at the same time, which gives the most seamless result. For exposed aggregate, carefully clean back the lid surface as part of the standard reveal wash, and protect the stainless from any acid wash run-off.
Pool builders, landscapers and homeowners who have lived with cracked plastic lids for a few years are usually the ones pushing for stainless on the next project. The maths is simple: a single quality 316L lid outlasts five or six plastic replacements and never needs to be matched to a faded finish later.
